Not exactly homeless

So, one day I found myself once again at the Geological Society of America conference. As always, they had a large room with presenters, many of which were schools. At this time, I was in grad school, but had something of a falling out with my Geology Professor, and was thinking that I needed a thesis. I wasn’t really interested in changing schools, but the thought struck me that, if I was, it would be really funny to market myself directly. So, I set up at the entrance to the exhibit hall and propped a sign against it.

I got no less than 10 offers to come to various graduate schools. One poor fellow was actually begging me- too bad I didn’t want to go to Minnesota. Don’t feel too bad about the long face- I gave someone my camera to take that shot. I was acting. Actually, far from “down and out” the sign was propped against my laptop!

John Metta

Greetings! I’m John Metta, writer, hydrologist, programmer, and a digger of all things tech nestled snugly in the Columbia River Gorge (i.e. Heaven). This blog started as a test bed for programming social media apps, but eventually became something that, for whatever reason, people actually read. In fact, people read it so much that I had to create a whole other blog called Mettaprogramming for the geeky stuff I write. Feel free to email me at or contact me on Twitter @mettadore.

A Glorious Day!
